Inches Robert Henri (June 25, 1865-1929) was an American painter notable for his teaching and leadership of the Ashcan School movement in art. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio but grew up in the small town of Cozad, Nebraska, which his father had founded. Henri Originally named Robert Henry Cozad, he began teaching at the New York School of Art in 1898 and also wrote The Art Spirit in 1923. Henri studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and later the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He returned to the states in 1886 and taught at the Women s School of Design in Philadelphia and then the Art Students League in New York. In 1908 he founded The Eight, an art school in New York, where he taught future American artists his realist ideas and techniques.
